Donga is an Afrikaans word adopted from Zulu (Nguni) which refers to deep
gullies formed on riverbanks by water erosion during the rainy season. The
soil is all washed to the bottom leaving steep, rocky approaches on both
sides. They were all dry at this time of the year.
There was an earth dam wall available for the faint hearted 100m downstream
but I'm always up for a challenge!

I hate those dongas!
(Actually, what's a donga?)
So that's a wonderful photo of a pretty hairy race obstacle. I think I'd
have got off my bike and ended my race right about there. Before the bridge,
not on it.
Cheers,

Last Sat. I borrowed an old Mountain Bike to enter a local MB Race on a

farm adjoining Kruger. I am really a runner & part-time road cyclist so
MBiking was something new. The bike wasn't a very good fit & I don't
even
have proper cycling gear. The route was quite tough with a lot of loose
sand
& some deep, rocky dongas to be negotiated. I was very circumspect (not
like
some of the young kamikazes!) & fortunately never came off. My heart
was in
my throat when I saw this 100m pontoon bridge made from fork lift
pallets
strung on two steel cables about 3km from the end . I just pedalled
like mad
& safely reached the other side unlike some unfortunates.
