Marian McQuade, a housewife from Fayette County, West Virginia, began
National Grandparents Day as a way to champion the cause of lonely
elderly in nursing homes. She had hoped grandchildren would tap into the
wisdom and heritage of grandparents. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978,
proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year
on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
