Smart Objects have been around since CS2. I have CS5 myself -- haven't upgraded to CS6 quite yet (though I'm nervous about waiting too long) -- and use SO's sometimes. Especially for filters like High-pass and Gaussian blur, none of which are adjustment layers. Yeah, I do that with groups too.
