Bob, These photos show the character of the area and people very well.
Once, back in 1992, I visited for a week a village hidden in a valley between the mountains, populated by Ruthenians. It is called Vyshka: http://goo.gl/maps/20yg9 It is just on the other (Ukrainian) side of the border, and about 200 km (as a bird flies) WNW from where you were. Beautiful area, interesting people. They primarily relied on natural economy, and almost did not need/use money, unless somebody, once in a while needed to go to the city. (It made it harder for us to buy milk and potatoes that we needed.)
