I bought a well used (brassing on the outside) 400mm f4 before the
*ist D first came out for somewhere under $350 on ebay.
I had shopped carefully and watched, and was pissed the next week when
somebody offered a much better looking one for the same price.
I'm shocked to see those prices now.  You would be crazy to pay them.
