While I was doing some research looking for inspiration nearby where I live, I ran across a site from the North Carolina DOT about North Carolina's Scenic Byways. Thought I'd share.
Some of them are really accessible from Grandfather Mountain & might be worth checking out as alternative routes when you're headed back home. http://www.ncdot.gov/travel/scenic/ It's both an interactive map & a link to an interactive PDF file you can download.
