On 9/1/13, P. J. Alling, discombobulated, unleashed:

>It seems that old fashioned camera stores can survive better than huge
>faceless chains. It just requires /work/ , and probably a bit of
>masochism. Milford Photo, seems to be surviving very nicely, at least
>for now. It probably helps that every other camera store in a 100 mile
>radius has dried up and blown away.

There used to be a fantastic independent photographic shop in Oxford
called Morris Photographic - in fact many a PDMLer who has made the trip
to Oxford was dragged in there by me at some point..

but for quite some years now they closed the shop and evacuated from
Oxford, retreating from extortionate rent and lack of decent trade.
Sure, tourists would come in and buy the odd case and batteries, but the
real money is in the high value items.

Instead, they set up in a business unit about 45 mins drive away right
up in the cotswolds near a village called Chipping Norton, where they
still are. They revamped the website and are now a major online
retailer. The joy is though, they still have an aladdin's cave showroom
chock full of lowepro bags and manfrotto kit, not to mention cameras of
all types. No appointment necessary, if you make the trip you just turn
up like any old shop. Brilliant.

So rather than try and beat the web business, they embraced it, and survived.

Just sayin
