Can't help with Btrieve specifics, but this sort of thing is why I always keep an instance of WinXP (and also Win98SE, a Linux or two, etc.) in VMware, ready to fire up. Install cranky old app; do crufty thing; restore VM back to checkpoint to get rid of it.
