I've been through that myself. That's one of the reasons that I keep my primary "negative archive" for digital photos on a RAID 10 array on a high-speed network, at a minimum. I don't trust CD-R, CD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R, etc., for long term storage. My long term storage plan includes hard drives in RAID arrays plus copies on CD/DVD recordable media, and flash media. At one time or another I've been screwed by all of those technologies, and others, but never by more than two at a time. We won't even talk about the various incarnations of tape backup.
