It used to be quite common for people leave their children alone for a few minutes, but now everyone is scared of shadows, but complains when their children grow up fat and with no sense of responsibility or adventure. There was a case a few years ago of a woman from Norway, I believe, who was prosecuted in New York for leaving her baby in a pram outside a shop when she went in for a couple of minutes to buy something. It runed out that this is normal for Norway, where people seem to have a more balanced idea about these things.
