I am currently using a Pentax FA28-70 f4 and a Sigma 17-35 F2.8. I would
like to get a single lens that covers this same range; 17-70-ish. I'd
like something a bit better than the consumer-grade and hopefully in the
$300 to $400 range. What suggestions can you give me?

The Pentax 17-70 fit's the bill perfectly. Note that it is rather prone to barrel distortion (at least the one I tried was), but the more modern Pentax bodies (K5) do distortion correction and Lightroom's most recent version, as well as Photoshop 12 (CS5) also support distortion correction for the 17-70 (and a whole bunch of other Pentax lenses).
