Those of you in Norway are surely in shock. I just watched the 9 am Norway time
news conference by the police. The number of dead on Utoya island was raised to
84. In downtown Oslo it is still 7 deceased.
Yes, it's pretty extreme ;-(
They also warned that the investigation would take months. They state the
horrific crimes are attributable to the one man, a local freemason who has
never been on the police radar. Central Oslo is coming under the control of the
military, to allow the police to investigate without interruption and to
prevent looting.
I haven't been there, but the notion that the military will control
Central Oslo in general, is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration. I think we
are talking about a limited area with is serious destruction of
buildings, where entering would might represent a bit of a hazard. This
area is rather central, but not quite where you would tend to find most
people shopping/walking around in the city or having a night out.
They are still searching the waters around Utoya, as many tried to escape by swimming
away, knowing there was no way they could reach land elsewhere. One man swam away
without removing his clothes or shoes first. He was forced to turn back and go ashore
before he sank and drowned. The gunman walked up to him and shot him. But he survived and
was interviewed. His timeline was reported as at least one hour before the police
arrived, and another hour until the shooting stopped when the gunman was tracked down and
arrested by a Delta Force team. They recovered a "machine gun" they declined to
identify. AK-47 certainly comes to mind.
My theory is a H&K MP-5 (widely used by the police and armed forces),
but it really makes little difference.
Part of the problem at the moment is that they have no positive idea of the
number of people that were on Utoya to begin with.
Yes, that's a bit of a problem. You'd think the people would have to be
registered somehow, but I suppose it was the kind of event where people
come and go. I know someone who left about and hour before the shooting
started because she didn't feel well. That minor illness must truly be a
blessing in disguise.

Jostein and Tim,
I'm sad to hear the death toll in your incidents is at least 87,
7 from the bombing and another 80 teenagers on the island.
What a sick wacko it takes to do this.
You have my condolences.

Hi folks,
I've tried a couple of times to post a chirp to the list, but my only
device is an android phone, and I suspect it smears my mails full of

Just to let you know, my family and I are all ok.
I would also appreciate it if everyone could refrain from pointing at
international terrorism for a couple of days at least. Nothing points
in that direction at the moment. He may not be aware of the second
incident here today. A shooting desperado with a machine gun and
dressed as a policeman went bananas in a youth camp on a small island.
Police strongly suspects the two incidents are connected. The
desperado, however, is 190 cm tall, of athletic build and with light
blonde hair and nordic appearance. Not your typical islamic extremist,
nor any self-exploding apparition from outer space as Darren seems to
imagine.
We will know more in a couple of hours, or maybe in a couple of days.
The desperado has been detained alive.
Thanks all of you, for your concern for us up here in the Frostpit.
Best,
Jostein
