Don't make it hard, shoot RAW+JPG. I've done it for as long as the
cameras have had the capability and before that I shot RAW (PEF) and
batch processed to DNG + 1.5MP jpg. Honestly for most of my uses a 2MP
jpg will do the job so I have the cameras set to generate 2MP images
and when I need the higher resolution or I need to PP the image I go
to the RAW file.

The other option is just to consider the non-destructive LR type
work-flow, the options are then pretty limit-less.
