There *are* technical terms.  The most relevant ones here are
"signature" - a section or group of pages bound together, usually
created by folding and cutting from one or more multi-page sheets,
and the rarer "quire".  A signature is usually a power of two pages.
(Note that in the example John gives there are 32 pages in each of
the missing or duplicated page ranges).

What John is describing is a book where some signatures are absent,
and in their place is another copy of a different signature.  This
is a fairly common mistake in bookbinding.
