I guess it all depends on what you're comfortable with, and what your
preferences and pretensions are.  Speaking only for myself, I don't
really care what my gear looks like, although I do like to keep
everything nice looking.  But hey, black tape, Pentax hoods on Leicas,
Contax hoods on Leicas, plastic container tops for lens caps ... it's
what goes on the film that counts.

If she's a serious photographer she won't care much about what your gear
looks like - why should you care what she thinks, anyway?  The snakeskin
LXs are just as much you as the older, beat up or more normal cameras. 
If she's a dilettante, she won't know or care either.  Be yourself and
wear clean underwear.
