I have a new 1TB external drive... everything on the C is back up on it.
As to the 500Gig that crashed, it is up and fine and now I'm copying everything on it onto the TB as well.
It's possible I could "fixed" it myself had it not been for my eyes... which couldnt tell that there was a space between "Chkdsk" and "/f ." The friend who rescued me pointed that out... the chkdsk run fixed corrupted files and everything that was on the 500
