I ask everyone (including parents of younger ones, as well as the young subjects) before shooting. Surprisingly, only about one in 10 says "no". Those who decline seem quite surprised when I thank them and say, "I'm only photographing those who are 100% comfortable with it. I won't take your picture if you don't want me too. Have a great day!" It's like they're expecting me to be argumentative or something. No strange looks, mostly big smiles.
