there are different Word formats (in addition to the quicksave variant Godfrey mentioned): the newer format is XML-based, not RTF, and not every feature can be converted to RTF; also some older Words can't read new Word's docs without a plugin, and the oldest Words' files (version 5 and under) are not supported in modern versions (as Ecke's father discovered)
