Any cash up front to blurb to do one of these books.

I assume that there's an economically optimal number of photos, probably
similar to the number of photos in the PDML annual.

I also figure that the amount of time spent getting each photo ready for
publication will vary from person to person.

Robert described the process well. But as a single data point for you:

I got the brilliant notion to do a book of my shots from around our garden for my wife for her birthday. I decided the 80-page landscape-oriented book would suit. After figuring out what my deadline was based on allowing for shipping time, I realized I had exactly three days to: select shots, clean them up, learn Booksmart (badly named, btw), edit the book, upload.

I made it. :-)

That includes two misfires where I had to delete the book project and start over. Robert is very generous in calling Booksmart "clunky". But once you get the hang of it, it's usable. I was forced to create several custom page templates though as none of the offered defaults were useful for the mix of 2:3 and 3:4 ratio shots I have. Some of my pages were full-bleed, but most weren't.

The book was very well received too, so that was the best part.
