Thanks John.
It behaves like I thought it would. What I thought about is the following:
Use a non P-TTL flash as a 240FT set to 2nd curtain. It should flash only once.
Find a way to make it of no use to the exposure but use it to trigger
other flashes with optical sensor.

In theory, it should work. But I won't know before I grab my hands on
the flashes....

Just a quick test now with the K10D set to rear curtain sync & AF280T on the hot-shoe, the flash fires with the front curtain, and no second flash.

I'll have to try it with the X-sync (PC) terminal on the K20 later. I'm "home" for a quick lunch & I left the K20 locked in the car.

The way it seems to work with the AF360FGZ and AF540FGZ (and the AF500FTZ for that matter) is they all get the rear curtain sync information through one of the dedicated pins.

Basically it appears the firing circuit closes with the front curtain and stays closed until the rear curtain gets ready to move.

I think you'll need something like this to get rear curtain sync to work with non-dedicated flash:

I haven't read it through yet, but it might also supress the pre-flash.
