Or, potentially, that you had some options set on the E-PL1 (like a
"preview mode" which stops down the lens even further) which make its
LCD operation seem particularly bad in the circumstances that you
looked at it in.

Like any other modern camera, there are a host of possibilities.
Saying something 'sucks' without understanding thoroughly what you're
looking at is pretty much a non-statement.
