It sounds like fungus and there is no reason that you should not have it cleaned. A lens like this may very well be affected by matter between the elements. Do what makes you feel better. I'd have it professionally done as the lens has a high number of elements plus the filter mechanism. Either that or return it for a refund if the condition was not described.
