Grebes are so cool.  They're almost always in pairs (regardless of
whether there's a nest nearby).  When they're nesting, one incubates
and the other stands guard.

I know that gulls will go after their eggs.  I'm not sure about Canada
Geese, but this couple seems not to be taking any chances:
