I understand that some mapmakers put errors in their maps on purpose
in order to tell if someone steals their mAps. I have no idea if
google does this.

I don't think so.
Google gets their maps from some company that also makes maps for GPS
systems. Google's got a "report a problem" link on most of their map
pages. Takes 'em a while to make corrections.
I think they have to forward the correction to the map company who have
to make the correction and distribute it back out to their customers.
