Reading Richard Dawkins' excellent "The Greatest Show on Earth" at the
moment, wherein, in passing he mentions Darwin's funny comment on
marine iguanas as being "dirty black in colour, stupid, and sluggish",
and adds a footnote:
"Victorian naturalists were given to value judgements of this kind in
their books. My grandparents possessed a big bird book in which the
entry on the cormorant frankly began, 'There is nothing to be said for
this deplorable bird'"
The cormorant's become the unofficial bird of the PDML, it's obviously
an reprobate.
