In Chickenhawk the author recounts how they used to clear young trees in
the chosen landing area *as they landed* with the rotors.....

A GOOD PILOT can still fly with a couple feet missing off the end of a rotor blade. It's not as big a problem if you manage to take more or less the same amount off of the end of both blades.

Takes a pretty big tree to do that. Small trees just kind of beat up the leading edge of the rotor blade.

Dustoff pilots were always the best of the best.
