One year his 2 week holiday was spent taking the barge from Hebden Bridge to Leeds and back. There's a place in London called Little Venice which is a very popular place for barge dwellers. I believe Richard Branson lived there at one time. For example, several trains of barges loaded with containers full of refuse ply the Thames every day, taking a large number of lorries off the roads. And for many construction projects near the river it is a condition on the builders that all spoils are removed by barge.
