Personal choice it is. I spent my days as cyclist (is that a word?) in one of those damned small towns and then we had the option - both in bicycles and motorcycles. I had my share of small accidents and suffered no severe trauma - and the amounts of skin grew back eventually.

That was in the 1965~1979 period, and we had no option of buying bicycle helmets closer than Sao Paulo - long away from us. Today I would wear helmets - have used since the 80's. And I often use helmet when I'm kayaking in any place other than open sea.

But I believe it's a personal choice (bikes) and I do advise anyone in hearing (or reading) range to take care. Head trauma is a serious issue.

Well, it's a personal choice, and I know there are those who take the
position that statistically, helmet wearers are more likely to get
into an accident (false sense of security or something), but I've had
several falls that I know would have resulted in nasty head injuries
were it not for the helmet I was wearing.
