The smells of my childood are haunting: the slaughterhouses at the union stockyards on the south side of Chicago, the garbage incinerator on 130th street, the Sherwin Williams Paint factory, and of course U.S. Steel south works. Sometimes the various aromas would all mingle in a way that reminded one of a rotting corpse. Ah, childhood meories. Those smells from the childhood can be haunting, sometimes. After some 30 years I returned north, to the rainforest-area of my first years, and almost cried at the smell of the rain in the forest. I never understood how I missed that small detail after so many years of strange places. Not that I'd return for good - I'm quite used to being within 10kms from the sea.
