The original was, indeed, drab. Mark Roberts sent me a version he touched up. I've never done much with post-processing, but his version was =so= much better that it inspired me to take a careful look at Mark's and its histogram, then spend a while in Lightroom figuring out what he did (curves! gack!).
After boosting saturation and vibrance, turning the tone curve from a straight line into a sigmoid, and then cropping tighter to get rid of some crap in the gutter, this is what resulted: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7535156 The original: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7528836 A striking improvement, I would say.
