Amita,

The Mississippi & Missouri are big rivers, the rest are nothing of
note as you drive to the Rockies.
I suppose that I dismiss them too quickly, but few of the waters are
navigable other than pleasure boats.

And surely these folks are not as poor as the Katrina victims, and are
better educated.
But farm jobs have been in decline since the 20's, and unless you
operate a corporate sized farm,
you're working two jobs to stay on the land.  The GNP for the area is
derived from crops.
