From an NPR report. Richard Evans Schultes was a botanist who explored the Columbian Amazon in the 1940's and 50's. Among other things, he documented the local culture with a 4x5 format camera. Some pix on NPR's web site. Others on display at the Smithsonian and a book is available. His botany focus was on how the natives used local flora for medicinal and hallucinogenic purposes.
