yes, those are good for vistas but most of the time you are going
to need tight shots too and you are screwed with such a wide lens
unless you want to do "digital zooming" EEEEEWWWWHHHH.

While I tend to agree with the underlying sentiment, that kind of 
generalisation doesn't take into account what you may be shooting on 
a NZ south island holiday .

Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near mountains, sweeping 
landscapes or ocean views without something in the 16mm (or 24mm in 
35mm terms) range.
