I agree it being a defect. On the other hand, I could not get any sharper images or better image quality by manually focusing the lens to infinity. It would be nice to know if the problem is in the lens or in the body. You told your lens focuses correctly at 16mm with your K10D but not with your K20D so I guess in your case the problem is with the K20D body.
