I went walking at lunchtime to make sure that the darned thing works. It seems to!
Most shots taken with the kit lens, then I popped the Tamron on for the last few. It seems to me like it's working just fine. I'm pleased. Nice responsiveness, great user interface (really prefer to the DS).
