I think it's a Halo Effect thing. Specifically, if Pentax is viewed as a viable "Professional Solution", the nimrods* of the world won't turn up their noses and sniff that Pentax is not a Real Camera like a Nikon or Canon. A few of them with more $$$ than sense will buy Pentax cameras. Pentax will sell more cameras.
Which is good for us because they'll stay in business and introduce more cool new lenses and such.
