The camera had to be in the pipeline a while because of the new sensor. 
The marketing could be a more recent change though.  I can't remember
but was the K10D early campaign different than the one for the K20D?

I think this was all planned before the Hoya merger.  It began with the

Samsung partnership.  I don't know if the K20 is the exact camera
Pentax 
had planned but it's got to be pretty close.
