At some point in their production Vivitar redesigned the flashes so they had 
low 
  voltage across the sync terminals. The newer ones have less than 12V the 
older 
ones about 200V. However that happened in the 80's, so older and newer is a 
relative term.

There are three ways to tell: 1-- supposedly, the low voltage models have a red 
dot inside the battery cover (note that it might have been changed at some time 
in the past). 2-- Send the serial number to Vivitar and they will tell you 
which 
you have. 3-- Check it with a digital multimeter.

#3 says my 283 is an old one.
