Pentax is a far larger company than Hasselblad, Leaf or Mamiya, with a consumer revenue stream to help fund development. It dwarfs the other MF companies in the same way that Nikon and Canon dwarf Pentax. Note that the entire MF digital market sells less than 10,000 backs a year (last I heard, sales were around 4000 units). Since the 1Ds is essentially selling into the same market, Pentax would be in a position to make serious waves in a market that doesn't have a lot of good solutions (1Ds is lens-limited for quality, other MF solutions are either too costly or in extremely short supply) I'm assuming that the Pentax 645D will roughly match the Mamiya 645ZD kit on pricing, so around $10,000 or less. That would be very aggressive pricing (it's about 1/3 less than the lowest end non-Mamiya back, with a larger sensor too). Pentax has been quite aggressive on pricing of late so an aggressive price for the 645D would make sense (I'd hope it would be priced similar to the 1DsmkIII). -Adam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
