Err...Pentax DA 10-17 f3.5-4.5 FE ? At 10mm you can do a full 360 FOV in 4 shots (I prefer a lot of overlap to help with correcting the distortion, so I generally do it in 5-7).
Are your friends picture just spherical panoramas rendered flat (ie equirectangular projection)?
