No, it's because of the possibility of radio emissions from your 
electronics interfering with the plane's on-board systems. Even radio 
receivers contain local oscillators that have the potential, however 
remote, of drifting off frequency and jamming some other important 
frequency. Surprisingly, the worse offenders tend to be portable CD 
players. They have multiple servo systems that spew out all kinds of RF 
garbage.
