- As a safety measure, be sure you select all image files in the  
catalog and use the command to Save Metadata to Files so that all the  
information specific to the files in the catalog database is stored  
with or in the files themselves.

- Then COPY the files and the catalog to the laptop. If your catalog  
is already on the laptop, you're fine.

- Dismount and disconnect the external hard drive. (now you have a  
backup in case anything goes wrong...)

- Start Lightroom, open the catalog. It will mark files it cannot  
find. Click on the little marker it puts on those files and it will  
ask you to find them. Once you locate a file in its new location, it  
will update the directory paths in the catalog for all similarly  
located files.

That's about it.
