Well, as smoker, it doesn't  convey that much to me, either. Now, a smoker 
outside an office building  sneaking a break, that might represent a pariah. 
Although in CA now they can't  smoke right outside the building anymore. There 
are lots of outre places smokers  are forced to grab smokes, but one's own car 
is the easiest and least  uncomfortable place -- and not regulated at all. Also 
most of us look like  something from the 1950's when we hang a cigarette from 
our lips.
