I once tested the Sigma 14 on my Canon 10D and found it awful.

I'd forgotten about the Tamron 14mm ... Never did find one to look  
at, but a couple of people on DPReview responded that it was a pretty  
good performer. Finding one now might prove challenging as I think  
they are out of production.
