I suspect the intersection of Leica owners and New Yorker readers is quite large, hence the love-in. Not all famous pictures are Pulitzer winners, and vice-versa. If you look at pictures of Vietnam photographers you'll notice that a lot - perhaps most - of them have Nikons AND Leicas round their necks.
