I have similar issues with the voting process. I don't believe it's a good thing, personally, and I don't like the way it has been implemented. I wrote them about my concerns some time ago.
I've taken the tack of simply submitting 10-20 photos every few days and letting the process do what it does. I don't take it as any ranking of the quality of the photographs I submit ... for my photos, I'd certainly choose a rather different selection than what they've chosen.
