I've been playing around with LightZone.  It has a nifty little tool 
called the zone mapper.  Very nice.  So far, LightZone has been more 
intuitive for me than photoshop.  They have a 30 day trial for Mac and 
Windows, and there are some demo videos on the web site.  Runs about 
$250 for the full version.  If you're running Linux you can have it for 
nothing, but it's unsupported.  Might be worth a test drive.
