I am certain that at one time people were of the opinion that we couldn't harm the Great Lakes until we nearly killed them, or that we couldn't empty all the fish from the sea until the Atlantic cod population collapsed. I suspect computer modelling has gotten more accurate over the past 40 years. People will believe what they find convenient to believe. Cultures that are centered around the automobile, industrialization and burning hydrocarbons tend to not believe that their culture may be environmentally harmful.
