HELP!

You may recall that I had a bit of a lightning problem here. The network card
and the router went out on me. Reloading factory defaults got every thing on
the router to working except the port the NIC was connected to which is DOA.
The NIC was chopped liver but I got one cheaply locally.

Then I discovered that the laser printer, an ancient Canon LBP-430, was not
working. Checking it out with an old Win 95 laptop I have showed that the
printer was working so I figured that it was the LPT port that had bought it. I
ordered a USB to Centronics cable, and a USB 2.0 card at the same time. When
they arrived I hooked the laser up with the USB cable and printed a testpage
OK. That was the last time it worked.

Now using the USB cable the printer works with the Thinkpad, which has no LPT
port, no problem. The printer works with the Win 95 machine using the LPT
cable, no USB at all on this machine, no problem. So it does not seem to be the
printer.

Now the Epson R-200 works fine on the desktop using the USB ports. It makes no
difference whether it is one the old 1.1 ports or the new 2.0 ports. But the
laser printer does not work on the LPT port, the USB 1.1 ports, nor the USB 2.0
ports.

I get a “printer ready” indication, but I get a “printer error” message in the
printer queue window when I try to print anything. I have removed and replaced
the printer ports. Removed and replaced the USB ports. Removed and replaced the
printer, and even removed both printers and only replaced the laser. I have
reloaded WinXPPsp2. NOTE: I have sp2 on the ThinkPad as well, but the printer
works from it (USB connection not trough the network which would use the
desktop).

I ran the windows printer troubleshooting program and all it suggests in the
end is that I seek help elsewhere. I did everything on the XP printer problem
page at microsoft.com. I am thinking of just buying a new laser, this one is
old and slow anyway, but am afraid that after buying one it won’t work either.

Anyone have any suggestions?
