They can't. Some folks are too caught up in being "correct" and desperately wanting to be perceived as "correct" that they will stop at nothing, including the destruction of other's egos that they have to do this. Oh, they'll argue otherwise and give all sorts of excuses for what they do. After all, they need to be correct. In the end, if they haven't spoken to the "offender" in private first, they're just full of their own narcissism.
